Muddy paths between Brussels and Waloonia
Roundtrip Waterloo via Brabantse Wouden to Jodoigne
The Trans Euro Trail in Belgium, particularly in the Ardennes region, is mostly made up of paved roads. It can be quite a challenge to find any muddy trails to ride on. It's not surprising, really, since motorized vehicles are generally banned from unpaved roads.
So, how can you enjoy some muddy trails around Brussels on a weekend? Enter Wikilog. This platform has a section dedicated to off-road trails in Belgium, which are primarily designed for 4x4 vehicles, but I think they’re perfect for off-road motorcycles.
I picked a round-trip trail just southwest of Brussels that crosses into Wallonia, about 130 km long, making it ideal for a weekend getaway. Around Waterloo, especially on the eastern side of the route, there are quite a few paved roads, but around 80% of the trail consists of fields and forest paths. Riding there was an absolute joy.
The trail showcased the stunning Belgian countryside around Brussels and Wallonia beautifully. You’ll see open fields, farmland, sections through forests, and charming little Belgian villages.
In true Belgian fashion, the weather was a bit damp with some rain, which added to the muddy fun. Just what I was looking for!
Just a heads up, some parts of the trail might be off-limits for riding due to local laws. As long as you’re respectful of others enjoying nature with their dogs or horses, you should be fine. For instance, I usually turn off my engine when passing horse riders, and they really appreciate it. I’ve never had issues with people walking their dogs either; I always slow down or stop. It’s just good manners when you’re aware you’re on paths that aren’t strictly meant for motorbikes.
